Weird Arcana - Burning Song of Cykranosh (New Spell)

Burning Song of Cykranosh
Conjuration
Level: Sorcerer/Wizard 3
Components: V, S, M (small incandescent piece of a meteorite that must be swallowed)
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level), see text
Effect: A red flame sphere hovers over the caster and plays alien non-Euclidian music.
Duration: Concentration (maximum 1 round/level)
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: Yes

You summon a ball of bright red coruscating fire that emits a strange song that can only be heard by spellcasters within medium range. The burning song of Cykranosh is always summoned over its caster. As a move action, the eldritch sphere can be moved to touch one target, within line of sight, until a maximum of 100 feet.
When the burning song of Cykranosh touches a non-spellcaster, the target can momentarily hear the alien music and suffers 4d4 points of sonic and fire damage and is stunned for 1 round. If the target has less hit dice than the caster, he becomes confused for 1 round per caster level. A Will save reduce damage by half and negates any conditions.
When the burning song of Cykranosh touches a spellcaster, the target loses his highest unused spell slot and suffers 1d6 point of damage per slot level. If the target has less hit dice than the caster, he becomes mute and deaf for 1 round per caster level. A Fortitude save negates the spell slot drain, damage and any conditions.
If the burning song touches an area or object affected by silence, it immediately dispels it. This also ends the burning song of Cykranosh.
If this dweomer is countered or targeted by dispel magic successfully both the caster and the dispeller suffer 5d6 points of damage and are rendered deaf for 1 minute (no save or SR applies).

  1. I really like the spell, but I"m curious to know what kind of history it might have, or role it might play.

It seems to me like the music requires some explanation. Otherwise the spell seems a little random.

  2. So, who or what is Cykranosh?

    Fascinating spell though.

  3. Thanks for the comments!

Actually, I didn't created any background for this dweomer. I just thought about a weird alien concept ("an alien music that manifest as fire and has peculiar effects"). I was just trying to evoke a flavor I guess.

"Cykranosh" is my favorite way-to-go for "alieness" stuff. Its Clark Ashton Smith's take on Saturn ;-)
